the 12.0.0 update sounds like it has some more support for the Switch Pro, along with a new IPC protocol breaking Atmosphere compatibility
[Nintendo Switch System Update] It appears that update 12.0.0 has added the capability for the Dock’s internal firmware to be updated. Can’t see an obvious reason why. (“Cradle” is the Dock’s internal name. Thanks to SwitchBrew and its maintainers.)
The Dock itself only contains USB chips, a MyDP -> HDMI converter, and flash memory to store its firmware. I’m not sure what the point of an update would be considering how basic it is inside. (As far as I’m aware, it has never received one before.)
If I’m reading the datasheet correctly, the HDMI out chip in the Dock is able to take a maximum 1080p60 video signal from the Switch. https://twitter.com/5chan_nel (5ch newer account) I believe the number added was 40 (0x80 total before, 0xC0 now). It's not impossible in theory for new syscalls to be added to the current Switch, but not likely this many of them, this late in its life, and with none of them actually being implemented so far. So it's a reasonable conclusion that these will be utilized by a new Switch model that shares the firmware, but has different hardware and kernel functions exposed through the new syscalls.
> There are now two IPC server threads, each of which processes up to 35 handles. > The new tipc server class has logic for automatically load-balancing new sessions to the least burdened server thread.
This looks like it might be a hint that the new model will have the OS running over multiple cores. There doesn’t seem much point to me in moving to two IPC server threads and load–balancing between them when they’re running on the same CPU core, but if one of the models has an OS which runs on 2 or more cores, then there would definitely be a benefit to splitting into two threads and automatically load-balancing between them. This could point towards a big-little style CPU setup, where there are a number of big cores (eg A76/A77/A78) which the games run on, and the OS is spread across 2-4 smaller more power-efficient A55 cores.
